Bins

Looking for a bin for your address? Bins are available for both the recyclable materials pick up and the food waste (compost) pick up.

Note

Please keep in mind that the bins provided by the city of Montréal are a public resource and are the property of the city. We recommend that your address be clearly indicated on your bin, and if you move, please leave them at your address. Please do not modify, paint or use them for any other purpose.

Bins for recovery of recyclable materials

The type of bin available for your address will depend on certain factors. Please see the city of Montréal’s website for all of the details.

If your address is eligible, we have small “bac montréalais” bins at our locations for you to use. Before coming to pick one up, please call us first to confirm that we have some available.

Please note that as of 2025, residential buildings with 20 units or more cannot obtain bins for the recovery of recyclable materials from the city and must purchase their own bins. It is recommended that these buildings use front-loading containers rather than individual bins.

Large wheeled bin (360L)
Small “bac montréalais” bin (67L)

Please wash your bin before bringing it to our office!

Make sure your damaged bins are washed well with vinegar or dish detergent before bringing them to our office. We store them in our office until they’re picked up by the borough.

Bins for the food waste (compost) pickup

Small brown bins

If you are a resident of a building with 8 units or less or are a small business or organisation, you can use a 47 L brown bin for recovery of food waste.

To obtain a new brown bin, please visit our office with a recent proof of address. If you are replacing an existing damaged bin, please bring your old thoroughly cleaned bin to our office so that we may dispose of it properly.

Wheeled bins for recovery of food waste

Larger brown wheeled bins are available for large residential buildings, as well as businesses, institutions and organisations.

If you manage or own a building with 9 or more units (such as an apartment or condo building), a business, or work for an institution or organisation, please contact us to start the process to obtain a new wheeled brown bin.

Kitchen countertop bin

Whether you use a small 47L bin or a larger wheeled bin, you can obtain a kitchen countertop bin to store your food waste before placing it in a larger brown bin. All addresses in the borough should now have their own kitchen countertop bins. If you move, please leave your bin at your address.

Maintaining your bins

We recommend using compostable paper bags or newspaper inside your food waste (compost) bins to reduce the need to wash them.

You can create your own bin liner with folded newspaper rather than buying bags.
