Bins

Please keep in mind that the bins provided by the city of Montréal are a public resource and are the property of the city. They must not be modified, painted or used for any other purpose. They must also remain at your address if you move. It is recommended that your address be clearly indicated on your bin.

Recycling

Wheeled bins

Larger green wheeled recycling bins are available for homes, apartment buildings, and organisations.

Businesses need to purchase their own green bins. The borough offers a free collection service for up to three 360L wheeled bins, once a week. Above that, a private collection service contract would need to be arranged.

If you manage or own a building with 7 or more units (such as an apartment building) or are a public institution or non-profit organisation, please contact us to start the process to obtain a new green wheeled bin, or to repair or replace an existing one.

Bacs montréalais

If your building, home or small organisation does not already have a green wheeled recycling bin, we have grey and green bac montréalais bins available at our office for residents in buildings of 8 or fewer units (including single-family homes) and small organisations. You can either use a larger wheeled green bin or a smaller bac montréalais, depending on the volume of recyclable material you produce.

To obtain the smaller bac montréalais, please visit our office with a recent proof of address. If you are replacing an existing damaged bin, please bring your old thoroughly cleaned bin to our office so that we may dispose of it properly.

Make sure your damaged bins are washed well with vinegar or dish detergent before bringing them to our office. We store them in our office until they’re picked up by the borough.

Food waste (compost) collection

Small 47L brown bins

If you are a resident of a building with 8 units or less or are a small business or organisation, you can use a 47 L brown bin to participate in the municipal collection.

To obtain a new brown bin, please visit our office with a recent proof of address. If you are replacing an existing damaged bin, please bring your old thoroughly cleaned bin to our office so that we may dispose of it properly.

Make sure your damaged bins are washed well with vinegar or dish detergent before bringing them to our office. We store them in our office until they’re picked up by the borough.

If your brown bin is damaged, but the damage is present only on the cover, it may be repairable. Please get in touch with us by phone or by email, preferably attaching a photo of the damage present on your bin, we will determine if the bin is repairable or not.

Larger wheeled bins

Larger brown wheeled bins are available for residential buildings with 9 or more units, as well as business, institutions and organisations.

If you manage or own a building with 9 or more units (such as an apartment or condo building), a business, or work for an institution or organisation, please contact us to start the process to obtain a new wheeled brown bin.

Kitchen countertop bin

Whether you use a small 47L bin or a larger wheeled bin, you can obtain (or you may already have) a kitchen countertop bin to use in your kitchen to store your food waste.

Newspaper bin liner

You can fold your own bin liner with newspaper rather than buying liners!
